height cm 85; length cm 206

This sarcophagus, decorated with a bas-relief only on the front, contained the remains of an Etruscan magistrate who died at 36 years of age. On the upper strip of the frame of the casket there is a long inscription containing the name of the deceased, the offices he held, some cultual prescriptions regarding the tomb, and the age at which he died. The relief shows the deceased himself on a chariot, preceded and followed by personages in keeping with his status who wear his sashes (emblems of power), in a procession that by recalling the high functions covered in life at the same time alludes to the journey beyond the tomb.
