The ground of the Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis was also densely occupied by many individual tombs. These consisted mostly of terracotta urns deposited in the ground and marked by inscribed funerary stelae, amphorae that served also as covers, and small tubes used for libations. These latter were used to pour liquids (wine, milk and honey) into the tombs below as offerings to the deceased and to the deities of the underworld, in particular the Manes.
The ashes of the humblest graves were instead either simply placed inside wicker baskets or wooden caskets, materials that can no longer be traced in the ground.
