Period 3

The majority of the marble sarcophagi unearthed in the Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis come from the Tomb VIII excavation. The two sarcophagi dating from the first half of the third century A.D. are of particular beauty: one decorated with reliefs depicting winged victories holding an unfinished portrait of the deceased, a woman; the other with a complex scene of the hunt for the Calydonian Boar. Another two sarcophagi are well conserved, and were placed in the tomb towards the end of the third century A.D.: the first has a central tondo with a portrait of the deceased surrounded by ribbed decoration; the second, strigilated, shows a philosopher and a veiled female figure, possibly in prayer.
There were also more modest burials in the Necropolis, in simple wooden coffins probably reinforced with strips of lead.
