This Christ crucified, dating from 1954, is a study for a painting preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of New York, known also as Corpus Hypercubicus, in which the cube symbolises the perfection of divine proportion. The classicism of the central figure contrasts with the surreal atmosphere of the two side figures, with the tools of the Passion: the rod, with which the soldier first struck Christ and then placed in his hand as a sceptre in a gesture of derision; and the lance with which the Roman centurion pierced his heart for the last time.
