Room 26. South America

The room offers an unusual view of the South American artistic scene during the last century, dominated by the birth of Mexican Muralism. The most important representatives of this phase, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco are presented here through small-scale works, rare examples of more intimate inspiration. In opposition to socially-engaged art there is the work of Rufino Tamayo, who offers an original reinterpretation of the art of the European avant-gardes and of American and French informalism. This panorama of South American art is enriched by a sculpture by the Bolivian Marina Núñez Del Prado and the large canvas Trip to the Ecumenical Council by the Colombian Fernando Botero, typical of his ironic streak, displayed in the adjacent room.
