Room 3. Milan and northern Italy

In the first half of the 1900s Milan played an influential role as the scene of artistic innovation. The first years of the century saw the development of the original nucleus of the Futurist Movement around the figure of Marinetti. During the subsequent decades the Academy of Brera became a workshop for important talents: Adolfo Wildt, Arturo Martini and Marino Marini were among the lecturers in sculpture, studied by Lucio Fontana and Fausto Melotti, among others. In 1922, again in Milan, the “Novecento” group was founded, becoming a point of reference for artists seeking to revive the harmony of classical lineage.
This room presents some of the key figures of the Milanese scene, alongside artists active throughout northern Italy, influenced by the atmosphere and innovations of the Lombard capital.
