Roman by birth and engaged since his youth in research informed by the legacies of expressionism and Pop, Franco Angeli first approached textural informalism, and then in the early Seventies participated in the experience of the Piazza del Popolo School, dedicating himself towards work influenced by Pop and distinguished by the reworking of symbols and contemporary icons. Realised in 1963, Pontifical emblem is a representative example from this phase. Angeli simplifies the triregnum, removing the three medieval crowns above the crossed keys, attributed to the apostle Peter, and recreates a simplified and modern version of the emblem of papal power with metallic and evanescent colours.
