Mario Ceroli, L’Angelo sterminatore
At the beginning of the Nineties, the sculpture of Mario Ceroli, known for the recognisability of his very personal language that developed around the creation of flattened silhouettes cut out of wood, underwent a change of direction and turned towards images of totemic power, isolated entities dominating the space around them. The exterminating Angel, a figure drawn from the Apocalypse and well-rooted in the popular imagination, explicitly refers to the sculpture that dominates Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. The artist is inspired by the imposing and threatening pose of the large bronze and, using gold leaf and calibrated drips of lead and tin, redraws its silhouette against a dark background of burnt wood, producing a powerfully aggressive charge.
