Room 5. Italian sculpture: from commission to inspiration

This room is almost entirely dedicated to Francesco Messina. The works on display are linked to some of the most important commissions on which the Sicilian sculptor worked during his career, such as the Monument to Pope Pius XII in St. Peter’s Basilica (1963), the Monument to St. Catherine of Siena, near Castel Sant’Angelo (1961), and the Pietà for the tomb of the Tridenti Pozzi family in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan (1948).
The room is completed by two masterpieces by Giacomo Manzù, Ritratto di Francesca Blanc (1940-1941) and Cardinale seduto (1962), the study for the Resurrezione of the Paul VI Hall by Pericle Fazzini and a Madonna col Bambino by Marino Mazzacurati, stylistically in contrast to the sculptural work of Messina.
