Attic Amphora with horse head
Attic Amphora with horse head
Room IX. Guglielmi Collection

The pictorial decoration on both sides, arranged within a metope, constitutes a horse’s head in profile, facing right, produced using the black figure technique and with interior details achieved by scraping and red retouches on the locks of the mane, the ear and the eye. The animal has a bridle, suggesting that it is a domesticated horse, but it appears to be without a bit.
The style of the amphora recalls that of the work of the Attic ceramic painter conventionally known as the Painter of the Aachen horse-head.
