Attic Kylix of the Painter of Jena
Attic Kylix of the Painter of Jena
Room XXI of the Sun-Dial. Attic and Etruscan ceramics

The late production of Attic ceramics nonetheless offers exemplars that are not without freshness and originally, such as this kylix by the Painter of Jena, the interior of which illustrates an imaginative and effective representation of Tryptolemus seated on a wheeled throne and pulled in flight by a pair of winged serpents. On the exterior Dionysius is depicted with Nike and a runner with a torch and youths. This painter, who conventionally assumes the name of the city where the majority of the works attributed to him are conserved, was active in Athens; his vases have been found in Crimea and Etruria.
