Attic Amphora with horse head
Rooms IX and X. Guglielmi Collection

The pictorial decoration on both sides, arranged within a metope, constitutes a horse’s head in profile, facing right, produced using the black-figure technique and with interior details achieved by scraping and red retouches on the locks of the mane, the ear and the eye. The animal has a bridle, suggesting that it is a domesticated horse, but it appears to be without a bit.
The style of the amphora recalls that of the work of the Attic ceramic painter conventionally known as the Painter of the Aachen horse-head.
