Luigi Pichler, Cameo with helmeted Ajax
This splendid cameo of Ajax by Luigi Pichler (Rome 1773-1854), is among the masterpieces of neo-Classical glyptic arts. It was the artist’s last engraved work, which he donated to Blessed Pius IX in 1853. The iconography of the head in profile, full of strength and pathos, is inspired by models of Hellenistic derivation.
