Donated to John Paul II in 1980 by Fiat during his visit to Turin, the Nuova Campagnola fulfilled the role of “Popemobile” for just one year and a day.
Registered in the Vatican on 12 May 1980, it was in this vehicle that John Paul II was the target of an assassination attempt on 13 May 1981.
At around 5.15 p.m. the Pontiff was injured by two gunshots from a 9 mm calibre Browning fired by the Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Ağca, while surrounded by the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the general audience.
Since the day of the attack, 13 May, commemorates the appearance of the Madonna to the shepherds of Fatima, Pope John Paul II, convinced that his life was saved owing to the protection of the Madonna, called for the bullet to be set into the crown of the statue of the Virgin venerated in Fatima.
