The Vatican Museums and photographic art: the core of a new collection

24 May – 1 July 2018
Palazzo Reale, Milan

The lens and the gaze of nine international photographers who interpret and unveil the multiple and complex identity of the Pope’s Museums, captured in their classic and contemporary uniqueness through a selection of 160 shots.
The prestigious exhibition centre of the Palazzo Reale, in the heart of Milan, will host from 24 May to 1 July the exhibition created by the Vatican Museums, "A Matter of Light. Nine photographers in the Vatican Museums", co-promoted and co-produced by the Municipality of Milan-Culture, Palazzo Reale, in collaboration with the publishing house Contrasto.

The exhibition, which forms part of the programme of the event Milano PhotoWeek 2018, is curated by Micol Forti, curator of the Vatican Museums Collection of Contemporary Art, and Alessandra Mauro, editorial director of Contrasto.

Bill Armstrong
, Peter Bialobrzeski, Antonio Biasiucci, Alain Fleischer, Francesco Jodice, Mimmo Jodice, Rinko Kawauchi, Martin Parr and Massimo Siragusa: these are the names of the nine “masters of photography” who have been commissioned by the Vatican Museums – in this case in the dual role of client and photographic subject – to portray and document, according to their own style, the spaces, works, visitors and atmospheres of the Museum.
The exhibition, entry to which is free of charge, stems from the plan to constitute the first body of photographic work in the Vatican Collection of Contemporary Art, and offers a valuable opportunity for reflection and experimentation.
