Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) nel duplice anniversario

Thursday 23 January 2020 | 05.00 p.m.
Conference Hall, Vatican Museums

On 23 January, as the first appointment of the new year and within the cultural context of the Thursdays in the Museums programme, the Vatican Museums will host the presentation of the 34th and penultimate volume of the series of Studi sul Settecento romano (Studies on the Roman eighteenth century. Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768), dual anniversary), for Edizioni Quasar, with the contribution of the “La Sapienza” University of Rome, 2018.
The publication, conceived and edited by the art historian Elisa Debenedetti, is a special issue dedicated to the great German historian and archaeologist, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, on the dual anniversary of his birth (Stendal, 9 December 1717), and his tragic death (Trieste, 8 June 1768).

The Pope’s Museums therefore return with this event – after the study day on the Montalto Collection in Villa Negroni in May 2018, and last year’s exhibition, Winckelmann. Masterpieces throughout the Vatican Museums – to share in the celebrations in honour of the great scholar and founding father of modern archaeology.

Introduced by the director of the Vatican Museums, Barbara Jatta, the presentation will be attended by the author, and there will be interventions by Marcello Barbanera, Francesco Gandolfo and Steffi Roettegen.
