Founded in 1977 at the best of the then-Director Deoclecio Redig de Campos, the Bollettino dei Monumenti, Musei e Gallerie Pontificie (Bulletin of the Monuments, Museums and Pontifical Galleries) is a scientific journal produced and published to this day by the Vatican Museums, with the prestigious editorial recognition of band “A” by the National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR).
The Bulletin represents the “voice” of the entire Museum, and aims to be a useful tool for the in-depth study and dissemination of the many research and activities carried out in relation to the historical, artistic and archaeological heritage of the Holy See. The main purpose of the periodical is to communicate the scientific news that emerges each year from the study of movable works, murals, architectural testimonies, monuments and gardens. It also shares with the academic community in-depth archival studies on the history and vicissitudes of the collections, together with updates on methodologies, diagnostic investigations, experiments and intervention techniques developed in the field of restoration and conservation by the in-house Restoration Laboratories as well as by the Cabinet of Scientific Research Applied to Cultural Heritage.
As an expression of the Directorate, over the years the Bulletin has published works by many authoritative figures, welcoming contributions from directors, curators, scholars and specialists who have worked in close contact with the scientific departments of the Pope’s Museums.
