Italian still life was one of the contemporary works chosen to be displayed in the Vatican Pinacoteca at the end of the 1950s, at the behest of Pope Pius XII. Morandi produced this small canvas in 1957 specifically for the Vatican Museums, again demonstrating his unparalleled capacity to create, in the concentrated encounter between a few humble everyday objects, a compositional equilibrium in which all the mechanisms are perfectly constructed. The poetic “temperature” of the scene is increased by the warmth of feeling that derives from the light, an invisible presence that envelops every detail of the image, becoming a further protagonist, as in many other of Morandi’s works.
