Study for Crucifixion is one of the most structured preparatory studies made by Sutherland for his large Crucifixion in the Church of Northampton. He produced a large series of iconographic propositions for this work, inspired not only by the famous altar of Isenheim completed between 1512 and 1516 by the German painter Matthias Grünewald, but also the photographic images of Holocaust survivors, who had only just been freed from the concentration camps at the time.
