Ceremonial headdress
The most famous artefact in the collection from Papua New Guinea, is a large feather headdress. The spectacular nature of the headdress, made using feathers from various birds such as the cockatoo and the bird of paradise, is heightened by the fact that after almost a century it remains preserved intact.
It is a intricate multi-colour work of art, 273 cm in height, and the technique used to make it has been kept secret by the craftsmen. A true masterpiece, its vigorous structure has proved able to survive both time and the long journey from Papua New Guinea to the Vatican.
