Urn with journey to the underworld
The lid represents the deceased, semi-reclining according to the custom of the banqueter, with a young face and idealised features. Dressed in a tunic and cape, he rests comfortably on a double cushion, while the right hand holds a now incomplete object.
The theme of the journey to the underworld by horse is depicted on the casket. The deceased is represented here as a rider in the saddle, and thus nobilised and heroised. Dressed in a tunic and fluttering cape, but with his head uncovered, he is followed on foot by a servant, as indicated by his short tunic, who carries a sack on his shoulders containing the items necessary for the journey. They are welcomed by a shrouded figure.
The urn, as in other cases, was probably enriched with lively polychrome decoration.
