Perhaps not everyone knows that the Vatican Gardens – the “green heart” of the world’s smallest state – contain in their 22 hectares of land not only botanical rarities and splendid fountains, but also many stone artefacts of art-historical interest. The restoration and conservation of these works, exposed to high risk of deterioration as a result of climatic and environmental factors, have been since the end of 2014 the subject of an extensive project of work coordinated by the Vatican Museums and the Directorate of Technical Services of the Governorate of Vatican City State.

This upcoming 3 October, with the restoration still in progress, the various professionals involved have considered it timely, from a scientific point of view, to dedicate a day of study and comparison to modern methods and to innovative and eco-sustainable techniques applied in conservation interventions, as well as the maintenance practices implemented for the correct conservation of the artefacts over time.
