On 21 May 1972 Michelangelo's Pietà was disfigured as the result of a deranged attack. Over 40 years later, on 21 May 2013, to commemorate that ill-omened day, the Vatican Museums and the Fabric of Saint Peter will hold a study day to retrace the history of the extraordinary and pioneering restoration works subsequently carried out on Michelangelo's marble masterpiece.
