The underground passages of Saint John Lateran reopen to the public

4 December 2023

From Monday 4 December, archaeological visits to the excavations of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran will resume.

After recent restoration work, and happily coinciding with the 1700th anniversary of the foundation of the Cathedral of Rome, an evocative and mysterious place still unknown to most people will be reopened to the city, tourists and pilgrims.

Mater et caput of all the churches of the city of Rome, important evidence of ancient Roman buildings that existed before the construction of the Christian basilica is concealed underground. Visitors, on their special tour, will take a journey back in time among the majestic rooms that once housed the Severan barracks, decorated with refined frescoes and mosaic floors perfectly preserved over the centuries.
