The Matisse Display Case introduces the next room, entirely dedicated to the preparatory sketches for the Vence Chapel, with a valuable selection of works and documents linked to the genesis of this holy building. Along with the small model of the tall Flèche that crowns the chapel, the five extraordinary coloured chasubles designed by Matisse, the first weaving of which is conserved in the Collection, are displayed on rotation. The display case is completed with three lithographs dedicated to the figure of the Virgin and Child, which demonstrate the gradual simplification of the figures destined to adorn the presbytery of the chapel, a letter with St. Dominique and a number of beautiful handwritten letters regarding the plans for the Chapel of Vence, that Matisse wrote between 1949 and 1952 to Mère Agnès di Jesus, prior general of the Dominican Congregation of Vence, who donated them to the collection in 1979.
