Chopping tool
This quartzite chopping tool originates from Middeldrift, South Africa, and dates from the Lower Palaeolithic, and in particular the Oldowan period.
The chopping tool is a pebble that has been chipped a few times on both faces to provide a cutting edge. This type of stone tool is the first and most ancient produced intentionally by man, and indicates the beginning of technology and material culture.
