Mbulu-ngulu, guardian of reliquaries
Among the most famous of the African artefacts conserved in the Ethnological Museum, associated with the worship of ancestors and originating from the Kota population of Gabon, this Mbulu-ngulu, guardian of reliquaries, was inserted into the basket that held the ancestors’ bones.
In many African religious traditions ancestors were – and still are – strongly venerated.
