Attic black-figure Pelike
Attic black-figure Pelike
Room XVIII. Collection of Vases

The scene of the sale of oil is shown on this pelike (rounded vase with two handles). The precious liquid, preserved in a vase similar to ours, is poured into a smaller container used for unguents (lekythos), while the purchaser is seated on a diphros (a folding chair). The auspicious inscription that runs along the scene "O father Zeus, may I become rich!" inspired the conventional name of the Painter of Plousios given to the author of this amphora of the end of the 6th cent. B.C.
