Produced by Roman craftsman, according to tradition this carriage was used in 1857 by Pope Pius IX to visit the Papal territories in the Legation of Romagna, a journey committed to history as “the last visit of a Pope-King”.
Different in structure to the other carriages, more robust and less decorated, it is the only travelling carriage in the Carriage Pavilion to be equipped with “shoes”, or rather, leather-covered brakes on the rear wheels.
The emblem of Pope Benedict XV on both doors indicates that this carriage was in use at least until 1922.
