In addition to being the first restoration laboratory founded in the Vatican Museums, the Painting and Wood Materials Restoration Laboratory is a working and organisational body of the first importance for the protection of the artistic heritage of the “Pope’s Museums”. The Laboratory is responsible for all procedures necessary to guarantee the protection, conservation and restoration of moveable and immoveable works with a painted surface and works in wood materials (sculptures, reliefs and other works in wood); in addition, the Laboratory undertakes the renovation and cradling of the wooden supports for painted works and the production and maintenance of frames.
This field of activity is very extensive and involves artworks from every historical period, from ancient to contemporary.
