smArtbook – Different Gazes
Imperfect snapshots of a perfect mechanism
Edizioni Musei Vaticani
August 2025
This book collects a series of photographs taken with a smartphone inside the Vatican Museums. The authors chose to move freely through the rooms, letting themselves be guided by the light, hidden details, and unexpected geometries. No professional equipment, no planning: just a glance and the ability to shoot at any moment.
The images are created in real time, with a device we use every day. The idea is not only to document one of the most visited museums in the world, but to observe how the smartphone can become an effective creative tool, capable of capturing the atmosphere of places in a spontaneous and personal way.
Between reflections, shadows, worn surfaces, and color contrasts, the book offers a different interpretation of the museum space. The flow of visitors, the pauses between rooms, the unusual shots: everything contributes to creating a simple yet intense visual narrative, where great art dialogues with the everyday gaze.
It's also a light-hearted yet concrete reflection on our way of looking, of preserving memories, and on the fact that today, to create art, sometimes all you need is a phone and a little attention.
The result is a book that breaks the mold, free from any pre-established framework.
