The "camerae secretae" of the Borgia Apartment (T.N.)

The volume presents the results of the long and complex restoration of the camerae secretae of the Borgia Apartment in the Vatican Museums, while offering an updated historical, artistic, and scientific overview of one of the most significant settings of the Italian Renaissance. Through contributions by scholars, conservators, and specialists, the book retraces the history of the rooms commissioned by Pope Alexander VI Borgia, placing them within the political and cultural context of the papal court and examining the role of Pinturicchio and his workshop in their decorative programme.

Considerable attention is devoted to the transformations undergone by these spaces over the centuries, from the recovery promoted by Leo XIII at the end of the nineteenth century to the restoration campaign carried out between 2001 and 2022. Scientific investigations and restoration appendices reveal the complexity of the interventions and the results of the most recent research. Biographical notes on the artists and an extensive bibliography complete the volume, making it a reference resource for scholars, conservation professionals, and art history enthusiasts.
