Ostia in the Vatican

Vatican Museums Conference Hall – live streaming

The conference to be held on Tuesday 14 June, at 04.00 p.m., at the Vatican Museums, in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, is dedicated to the ancient city of Ostia, and its archaeological artefacts, some of which are conserved in the pontifical collections.

After greetings from the Director of the Vatican Museums, Barbara Jatta, and the Director of the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, Alessandro D’Alessio, the meeting will be moderated by Giandomenico Spinola, Director of the Vatican Museums Department of Archaeology.
The lineup of speakers will begin with the curator of the event, Claudia Valeri of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, who will then leave the floor to her colleagues at the Archaeological Park of Ancient Ostia: the Director D’Alessio and the archaeologist Filippo Marini.

The conference will focus on constructive exchange with the aim of investigating some archaeological contexts that have recorded a high level of loss of materials and artefacts over the centuries. The goal is the recomposition, albeit virtual and at a distance, of the decorative apparatuses - statues, portraits, architectural elements - now preserved in the Vatican and the monuments of Ostia to which they originally belonged. It is therefore intended to initiate a synergistic dialogue between the two institutional entities within which to outline a joint strategy that can further promote a common archaeological heritage.
