Di Terra, di Cielo e di Mare

A digital exhibition for an extraordinary virtual exploration

3 December 2021
Museo Officina dell’Educazione – ModE, Bologna

"Di Terra, di Cielo e di Mare. Esplorazioni virtuali e scoperte tra Musei Vaticani, MOdE e Museo della Specola di Bologna" (Of the Earth, the Sky and the Sea. Virtual explorations and discoveries between the Vatican Museums, the MOdE and the Specola Museum in Bologna) is the title of the original and innovative virtual exhibition set up on 3 December - and open to visitors with no space or time limits - in the virtual exhibition environment of the digital museum of Bologna Museo Officina dell'Educazione – ModE: an entity belonging to the Sistema Museale di Ateneo (SMA), the university museum system of the University of Bologna, which collects, catalogues and exhibits expressions of educational culture.

Among the organisers and promoters of the exhibition are the “Pope’s Museums”, along with the Sistema Museale di Ateneo and the “Giovanni Maria Bertin” Department of Educational Sciences of the University of Bologna; a special and fruitful collaboration enabling a virtual journey through the Vatican and Bologna collections to understand how the explorations and discoveries that began in the 15th century affected the representation of the Earth, the Sky and the Sea as shown on planispheres, maps and globes, and how fundamental the Church's support was for the development of astronomy in Bologna, the second most important city in the Papal States.

The exhibition project is curated by Eugenio Bertozzi, Paola Focardi, Chiara Panciroli and Maria Serlupi Crescenzi (Director of the Decorative Arts Department of the Vatican Museums), with the support of Daniela Serini, co-curator of the exhibition and former Officer of the Educational Activities Office of the Vatican Museums
