Art and faith for the time of Lent

22 February 2023

Continuing the experience of last year, for the entire Lenten and Easter period, the 14 oil paintings of Gaetano Previati's Via Crucis will once again leave the exhibition spaces of the Vatican Museums' Modern and Contemporary Art Collection to be exceptionally placed in Saint Peter's Basilica as an offering to popular devotion and admiration.

Among the works on the theme of the Via Crucis, the Pope’s Museums, in collaboration with the Fabric of Saint Peter, have confirmed for the second consecutive year the choice of the paintings by the Ferrarese painter Gaetano Previati (1852-1920), due to the expressive force, notable size and intense colours of the 14 stations that seem to fit in with profound harmony in the sacred space of the Vatican Basilica.

Not an exhibition, but a devotional display able to convey the message of the Passion of Our Lord through a work by a great Italian artist endowed with remarkable incisiveness.
