Fountain of the Zitella
The unusual name of this fountain was inspired by the seated female figure in marble, dressed in an ancient Roman gown, which surmounts it.
Sculpted in Pentelic marble, it dates from the second century B.C. and was installed in the Vatican Gardens during the sixteenth century. The elegance of the woman, her gently reclining posture, and thoughtful attitude, create a wonderful harmony with the surrounding nature.
