Conference Proceedings "Francesco Borromini 1599-1667"

3 June 2025
Vatican Museums Conference Hall – in person and live streaming

For years, the Vatican Museums have been a key figure in international art-historical research, thanks to the conferences, publications and academic collaborations that actively contribute to scientific and cultural production. It is in this spirit that one of the most keenly awaited editorial projects of 2025 is launched.
On Tuesday 3 June, in the Vatican Museums Conference Hall the book Francesco Borromini 1599-1667. Atti del Convegno internazionale (Francesco Borromini 1599-1667. International Conference Proceedings) edited by Alessandra Rodolfo and Luca Ribichini and published by Edizioni Musei Vaticani, will be officially presented.

The book is a collection of the proceedings of the conference organized in December 2017 by the Vatican Museums, in collaboration with the National Academy of St. Luke and the Faculty of Architecture “Sapienza” University of Rome, on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the death of the renowned architect from Ticino. The publication now represents a milestone in studies on Borromini, offering a complete, interdisciplinary and up-to-date overview of his work and of the legacy of one of the central figures of Baroque architecture.

Further significance is added to the event by the special presence of Giovanna Portoghesi, wife of the great architect Paolo Portoghesi, promoter of the conference and a key figure in the critical rediscovery of Borromini. Her participation constitutes an authentic tribute to the Maestro, who died in 2024 and whose vision inspired and guided the project.
Speakers during the evening will include Barbara Jatta, Director of the Vatican Museums, Joseph Connors, Professor Emeritus of Harvard University, Marcello Fagiolo, Professor Emeritus of "Sapienza", Francesco Cellini, Architect and President of the Academy of St. Luke, and the editors of the book.

With 440 pages and 237 illustrations in colour and in black and white, the work offers a fundamental tool for scholars, architects and enthusiasts of history of art and architecture, reaffirming the role of the Vatican Museums as a centre of excellence for research and the promotion of cultural heritage.
