The magic of the Decemviri Altarpiece, recreated in Perugia
From 11 October 2019 to 26 January 2020, the National Gallery of Umbria of Perugia will be the backdrop to an exceptional art event made possible thanks to collaboration with the Vatican Museums. After two centuries, the Decemviri Altarpiece, by Pietro Vannucci, “il Perugino”, will return to the space for which it was conceived, inside the Priori Chapel, the heart of the main administrative body of the medieval municipality of Perugia.
The exhibition, curated by Barbara Jatta, director of the Vatican Museums, and by Marco Pierini, director of the National Gallery of Umbria, proposes the extraordinary reunion, in their original location, of the frame and the moulding, conserved in the National Gallery of Umbria, and the central panel of Perugino’s “Madonna and Child with Saints”, from the Vatican Pinacoteca.
After the exhibition in Perugia, the work will be presented – still in its entirety – at the Vatican Museums in spring 2020, as an inaugural event of the Vatican celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520).
